Questions Clients Ask Before Starting

A grounded look at the concerns that come up before a solar PV project moves forward, and how we answer them honestly.

Every project starts with a conversation, and the questions are almost always the same. Not because clients lack imagination, but because they have been burned before by vague promises and glossy proposals. When someone asks about payback periods, equipment warranties, or what happens when the grid goes down, they are really asking whether we understand their specific situation.

One question that comes up repeatedly is about inverter sizing. A client will have a quote from another contractor that specifies a larger inverter than the array seems to need. The real answer is that inverter sizing depends on the module orientation, the local irradiance profile, and whether the site is prone to clipping during the middle of the day. We walk through the numbers on site, showing how a slightly oversized inverter can actually reduce lifetime performance if the array rarely reaches peak output.

Another common concern is about maintenance access. Facility managers want to know how they will reach the combiner boxes and DC isolators once the plant is operational. This is not a trivial detail. We have seen installations where the string monitoring equipment was mounted in a position that required a cherry picker to inspect, which turned a routine check into a costly operation. During the design phase, we flag these access issues early and suggest practical alternatives.

Grid compliance is another area where clients ask pointed questions. They want to know who handles the municipal paperwork, how long the approval process takes, and what happens if the local network operator rejects the application. Our answer is straightforward: we prepare the documentation, coordinate with the relevant authorities, and keep the client informed at each step. We have been through enough applications to know where the bottlenecks usually appear.

The question that takes the most time, though, is about performance expectations. Clients want a realistic figure for how much energy the plant will generate in its first year, not a best-case number from a marketing brochure. We base our estimates on historical irradiance data for the specific location, accounting for shading, soiling, and inverter losses. Then we explain how the performance ratio will be tracked once the plant is live, so there are no surprises when the first monthly report arrives.

Finally, there is the question about what happens after commissioning. Who do they call when an inverter trips at 2 a.m.? What is the response time for a fault that shuts down a portion of the array? We are clear about our service levels and the fact that remote monitoring can resolve many issues without a site visit. For the faults that do require physical intervention, we give a realistic timeframe based on the distance to the site and the availability of spare parts.

These conversations are not about selling a system. They are about building a shared understanding of what the project involves, what can go wrong, and how we will handle it together. That is the foundation for a working relationship that lasts beyond the installation date.
